Year 4 - Curriculum
Dear Parents,
Below you will find the curriculum your child will be covering this Summer term (2022). Not all subjects are taught each term but are covered throughout the year. Please use this planner for discussion and research with your child.
Summer Term
RE
|
- Easter - Children will look at the Resurrection from the four Gospels. They will learn about the different reactions of people to the news that Christ was alive. Children will study the story of the Ascension.
- Pentecost - Children will revisit the story of Pentecost and they will identify the effect it had upon the disciples. They will learn about the missionary activity of the Apostles and some prayers of the Holy Spirit.
- Sharing in the life of Christ - Children will learn about the Universal Church established on the original teaching of the Apostles. They will reflect upon the Eucharist as a Sacrament which celebrates the Church’s unity. They will also look at other religious customs from around the world.
- Special Roles and Responsibilities - Children will learn about the different tasks and responsibilities given to people in the Church. This will help them to develop their understanding of the Church as the Body of Christ made up of many different people.

- Decimals - comparing and ordering decimals using fractions knowledge; rounding decimals; halves and find halves and quarters.
- Money - using pounds and pence; ordering money and working with money using the four operations
- Time - finding hours, minutes and seconds; using years, months, weeks and days; analogue to digital 12 hour and 24 hour.
- Statistics - interpret and present data with line graphs
- Geometry - identify acute and obtuse angles; use a protractor to measure angles; compare and classify geometric shapes including quadrilaterals and triangles; identify lines of symmetry; describe positions on a grid using coordinates; plot points on a grid
- Position and direction - describing positions; drawing on a grid; describing movement on a grid.

Spring Term
RE
|
- Christmas - Children will study the roles of angels in the story of Christmas. They will learn about Christians being messengers of Christ’s Good News in the world today and how the Church celebrates Christmas.
- Old Testament: Moses – King David - Children will study important stores about Moses and God’s relationship with the people of Israel. They will also learn about the life of King David. They will look at the importance of prayer and vocations.
- Lent - Children will explore some of the customs and practices associated with the celebration of Lent. They will look at prayer, fasting, almsgiving and the forgiveness that God offers to those who believe in him.
- Holy Week - Children will deepen their knowledge and understanding of the story of Christ’s passion and death. They will reflect upon the circumstances and reasons for his death.

Autumn Term
RE

- Creation and the story of Abraham to Joseph - Children will explore the images of God portrayed in bible stories and consider what it means for humans to be made in the image and likeness of God.
- Jesus teaches us how to pray - Children will learn about the prayer life of Jesus as he grew up. Children will look at the importance Jesus attached to prayer and will study some of the traditional prayers of the Church.
- Advent - Children will learn about Jesus being a descendant of the House of David and place the first coming of Jesus in historical context.

Maths

- Place Value: Children will order four-digit numbers. They also work out thousands more or less than any four-digit number, focusing on which digit changes and which digits stay the same.
- Addition and Subtraction: Children practise mental addition and subtraction methods using known number facts. They work through one-step and two-step addition and subtraction word problems. Children estimate the answer to a calculation and add or subtract pairs of three-digit numbers using the formal written method of column addition and subtraction.
- Multiplication, including the 6 and 9 times tables: Children use the “key facts” to work out multiplication and division facts for the 9 and 6 multiplication tables. They are taught the strategy of using the 10 multiplication table and adjusting, to work out the 9 multiplication table. Children also develop their understanding that multiplication can be done in any order.
- Perimeter of shapes: Children are introduced to perimeter for the first time. They explore what perimeter is and find the perimeter of simple 2d shapes. They compare the area of perimeter with different 2d shapes.

- Eating and digestion - Children will find out about food groups and healthy balanced diets. They will study the human digestive system and how food is transported around the body. Compare diets of herbivores, carnivores and omnivores. Investigate teeth and what causes decay. Look closely at food chains/webs.
- Environment and habitats - Look at characteristics of habitats and different living organisms, classify different organisms into their groups, use a classification key to group organisms, identify and classify a variety of British plants and explore impact of humans on living environments and organisms.
