Year 3 - Curriculum

Dear Parents,

Below you will find the curriculum your child will be covering this Autumn term (2019).  Not all subjects are taught each term but are covered throughout the year.

Please use this planner for discussion and research with your child.

Autumn Term

RE

Belonging in God’s Family - Looking at the different groups we belong to, exploring the Sacrament of Baptism and seeing how Catholics celebrate belonging to God’s family through Mass.
Reconciliation - Exploring human choices, the consequence of sin and Christ’s teaching on forgiveness and the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
Advent  - Looking at the Bible stories of the Annunciation and the Visitation. How Mary prepared for the coming of Jesus and how we should use Advent as a time to prepare ourselves for Christ being welcomed into the world.

Numeracy

Place Value – Reading and writing numbers and numerals up to 1000, recognise the value of each digit in a three digit number. The children will also be finding 10 and 100 more or less than a given number.
Addition and Subtraction – Adding and subtracting numbers with up to 3 digits, using formal written methods of columnar addition and subtraction. The children will be adding and subtracting numbers mentally including three digits and ones, three digits and tens and three digits and hundreds.
Multiplication (including the 3, 4 and 8 times tables) and division - Recall and use multiplication and division facts for 3, 4, and 8 times tables.

Science

Plants: to identify and describe the functions of different parts of flowering plants, explore the requirements of plants for life and growth and how they vary from plant to plant, investigate the way in which water is transported within plants and explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants.
Forces and magnets: to compare how things move on different surfaces, notice that some forces need contact between 2 objects, but magnetic forces can act at a distance. observe how magnets attract or repel each other and attract some materials and not others, compare and group together a variety of everyday materials on the basis of whether they are attracted to a magnet, and identify some magnetic materials, describe magnets as having 2 poles and predict whether 2 magnets will attract or repel each other, depending on which poles are facing.
